Why It’s Hard to Find Good Freelancers on Fiverr

By spending only 5 minutes on the platform, you’ll immediately notice the struggle. There’s an endless list of freelancers offering everything from logo design to digital marketing and complex coding.

But here’s the catch: Not all profiles reflect real talent.
So, what makes it hard to find great freelancers on Fiverr?
From my experience, these are the main reasons:

1) Quality Varies Wildly: Because Fiverr is open to everyone, it means that you’ll find both beginners and experts all in one place. It can be hard to tell who is better than the other, especially when you see new profiles claim they are only new to Fiverr but have 10+ years of experience.

2) Low Prices Can Be Deceptive: Believe me, I was also trying to find the cheapest services to save money, but in most cases, it comes at a high cost in quality.

3) Profiles Can Be Misleading: Let’s face it – Some profiles look better than the actual service of the freelancer. Flashy graphics or vague descriptions can be a way to cover up a lack of real experience.

But don’t worry, I will show you exactly how to find the perfect freelancer so keep reading.

Step 1: Start With a Clear Project Outline

Before jumping to Fiverr, take some time to think about your project and understand what it requires. I’ve learned that the more specific I am, the better the results of my projects.

Think about specific skills that are essential to your project. For example, if you are looking for a writer, do they need SEO knowledge or just be the best copywriters? Should they have experience in a specific niche?

Additionally, projects require a budget, so you should know your limits, but also be prepared to pay a bit more if the quality of the service is high enough to justify the cost.

Step 2: Use Fiverr’s Filters to Your Advantage

Fiverr has great filtering options which have saved me tons of time looking for the right freelancer. I always start by typing in specific keywords but then narrow down using filters.

Here’s what’s worked best for me:

1) Use Specific Keywords: Be as specific as you can. If you are looking for digital marketing services, type in the most accurate service possible, for example, “Telegram channel organic promotion”.

2) Filter by Seller Level: I usually search for “Level 2” or “Top Rated” sellers for complex projects. However, when I test new freelancers with small projects I also look for “Level 1” sellers with a lot of experience.

3) Set Your Budget and Delivery Time: From my experience, narrowing down by budget and delivery time can help filter out freelancers who may not fit your project’s needs.

Step 3: Look at Reviews and Portfolio Pieces

When I’m serious about a freelancer, I dig into their reviews and portfolios to see what kind of projects they completed and what other clients have to say about them.

By doing it, you can discover bad/fake services or see that the freelancer has never completed anything like your project so you can be more cautious.

Another important thing to consider is how recent the reviews and projects in the portfolio are, so you know that this freelancer is active and experienced in his niche.

Step 4: Message Before Hiring

Even though it sounds so simple, many people skip this step and immediately place an order once they find “the one”.

However, a quick message can save you from a lot of headaches later on. Plus, it’s a great way to see how responsive and knowledgeable they are.

Questions I usually ask are:

  • Do you have experience with similar projects?
  • Can you share additional samples or offer insights on the project?
  • What’s your process for revisions, if needed?

Messaging a few candidates gives you a feel for who’s genuinely interested in your project versus who’s just looking for a quick sale.

Step 5: Start with a Small Project

If your project is big, it is worth looking for a freelancer who can complete a small test project first. This approach has saved me a lot of stress, as I can see their skills, communication, and timeliness before committing to a bigger project.

1) Start Small: For example, if you need to develop a website, start by letting a freelancer design only one page to assess the quality.

2) Pay Attention to Details: Pay attention to both the quality of the work and how the freelancer handled the project. Were they communicative? Did they deliver on time? Those “small” details can tell whether they’re worth a long-term partnership.

Step 6: Building a Strong Working Relationship

Once you find the freelancer that nails your projects, don’t let them go! It can be a game-changer for your business to maintain a great relationship with talented freelancers.

I believe that great freelancers must have a feeling that they are a part of your team, so they feel more committed to your projects.

Finding the right freelancer on Fiverr doesn’t have to be a guessing game. By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to finding, testing, and building lasting relationships with talented freelancers who make your life easier and your projects shine.
